Engineered Retaining Walls & Structural Earth Retention

Retaining walls are structural engineering projects. We build walls that hold back tons of earth and water — engineered with proper drainage, base, and reinforcement to never fail.

    Retaining Walls

Structural Earth Retention Built to Hold Back Tons of Soil Forever

A retaining wall isn't a decorative feature; it's a load-bearing structure holding back thousands of pounds of saturated soil. When a wall fails, it's almost always because of poor drainage, an inadequate base, or missing reinforcement — not the visible stone. We engineer every retaining wall from the ground up: proper excavation depth, compacted aggregate base, geogrid reinforcement on taller walls, and a drainage system behind the wall that channels water away rather than letting it build hydrostatic pressure. The stone you see is the finish; the engineering you don't see is what makes it last.

    How We Build

    Our Retaining Wall Build Process

    1

    Site Engineering & Permits

We assess soil load, slope, and water flow, calculate wall geometry, and pull permits for walls requiring engineering sign-off.

    2

    Excavation & Base Construction

We excavate to below frost depth, install geotextile, and compact a crushed stone base in lifts — the foundation that prevents settling.

    3

    Drainage & Reinforcement

Perforated drain pipe, gravel backfill, and geogrid layers tie the wall into the earth behind it, eliminating hydrostatic pressure.

    4

    Wall Construction & Finish

Block or stone laid in bonded courses with proper batter, capped and sealed for a clean, structural finish.

    The Difference

    Professional Engineering vs. Standard Installation

    Feature
    Gonzalez Hardscape
    Standard Approach
    Engineering
Calculated for soil load, water, and height
Stacked block with no structural plan
    Drainage
Drain pipe and gravel backfill behind wall
No drainage — hydrostatic pressure builds
    Base
    Excavated and compacted aggregate base
Block set on surface soil or thin sand
    Failure Risk
    Engineered for 50+ year lifespan
Bulging, leaning, or collapse within years

    Client Feedback

    What Retaining Walls Clients Say

"Our yard had a serious slope problem. Gonzalez built a two-tier retaining wall system that's now the best-looking feature on our property — and it's rock solid."
